History

For 39 years, the Heating Energy Assistance Team, Inc. has helped low-income families and individuals in Georgia pay their energy bills. Learn how the organization became the nonprofit it is today.

1970s

Energy prices rise dramatically, impacting our entire society, especially the poor.

1982

Frances F. Pauley, advocate for the poor and founder of the Georgia Poverty Rights Organization, approaches Atlanta Gas Light Company concerning the burden rising energy costs are having on low-income citizens.

1983

Atlanta Gas Light establishes the HEAT program internally to raise money for energy assistance.

2000

Following deregulation of the natural gas industry in Georgia, HEAT becomes a separate 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Its mission remained to provide energy assistance to the less fortunate as a joint effort among concerned citizens, businesses and state and local government.
